Does breastfeeding have a positive or negative effect on atopic dermatitis?

This issue often sparks differing opinions. Some believe that breast milk helps protect babies from various infections and allergies, which is true; others believe that if a baby already has allergies, the mother should avoid certain foods to prevent passing on allergens to the baby. However, there is currently no clear evidence to support this preventative approach. The best course of action is to discuss it with a doctor. Atopic dermatitis is rarely related to food allergies, so if you wish to breastfeed, there is absolutely no need to worry. On the contrary, breastfeeding is a better option.

What skincare products can be used daily to improve atopic dermatitis in babies?

It is recommended to use moisturizing products daily. Formulas specifically designed for infants and young children can rebuild the skin's surface oils, repair and protect the skin barrier, and instantly reduce itching by up to 95%! For example, Mustela Stelatopia's Extra Strong Anti-Itch Eczema Cream is recommended to be used at least twice daily, after or even during bathing. Moisturizing products are helpful in combating atopic dermatitis. However, note: If the skin develops an oozing rash, do not use moisturizing products; instead, use a doctor's prescription medication.

Can a baby with atopic dermatitis still receive vaccines?

Of course. Vaccines will not worsen atopic dermatitis; on the contrary, they can protect your baby from diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, and polio. Even if the chance of infection is low, a complete vaccination record should still be maintained. The only recommendation is: if your baby is currently experiencing a skin flare-up, postpone vaccination to avoid exacerbating discomfort.

When are babies most likely to develop eczema?

This cannot be accurately predicted because every baby's constitution and sensitivity are different. However, it is certain that atopic dermatitis will alternate between flare-up and remission periods. Remission periods can be prolonged through appropriate skincare products (such as baby-specific moisturizers) and daily care (such as keeping the room well-ventilated and avoiding excessive sweating). In addition, babies are more prone to eczema when teething or when they have a cold (such as nasopharyngitis).

If atopic dermatitis is hereditary, will the severity of the flare-up be the same?

Absolutely not. Even if you or your partner have experienced severe itching, it doesn't mean your baby will have the same problem. Every baby's skin is different, and the itching may be much milder than what you've experienced in the past.

Will atopic dermatitis leave marks on a baby's skin?

Absolutely not. Even if the rash is severe, oozing, or crusted, it will not leave permanent marks. Even more reassuringly, atopic dermatitis is not contagious and usually improves with age.

Do I need to avoid certain foods to prevent eczema flare-ups?

Not necessarily. Atopic dermatitis is rarely caused by food allergies. If you have any concerns, please consult a doctor. However, some foods can irritate the skin when in contact with it, especially when the lips and surrounding skin come into contact with food during eating, which may trigger an immune response and cause eczema flare-ups. If you are unsure, please consult a dermatologist.

Is it normal for a baby's lymph nodes to swell during an eczema flare-up?

Yes, this is possible. When eczema flares up, the skin becomes inflamed, triggering the body's defense mechanisms, which can lead to swollen lymph nodes. If you're worried about a possible skin infection, don't be overly anxious; this is rare. The best course of action is to consult a doctor for confirmation.

What are the differences between atopic dermatitis and contact eczema?

Both are allergic reactions, but their causes differ. Atopic dermatitis is often hereditary, may appear a few months after birth, and gradually improves with age, typically with cyclical flare-ups and remissions. Contact eczema, on the other hand, can occur at any age, especially during adolescence or adulthood, and is usually caused by skin contact with specific substances (such as solvents, nickel, medications, rubber, etc.). Symptoms usually disappear once contact is stopped, and treatment can be discontinued; however, atopic dermatitis requires continuous care.

How to prevent atopic dermatitis?

While it's impossible to completely prevent itching, the likelihood of flare-ups can be reduced through several methods. First, using baby-specific moisturizing products helps replenish skin lipids, repair and protect the skin barrier, and instantly reduce itching by up to 95%. Second, some simple daily measures can be taken: keeping the room well-ventilated and regularly washing plush toys to create a comfortable environment for your baby.
