If you develop some good habits every day, your baby can stay in good shape anywhere.
In cities: What health care habits should be adopted for infants with atopic skin?
Cities are indeed more polluted, with dust, grime, and tiny particles from exhaust fumes. This pollution exposes the skin to allergens (see our topic on atopic dermatitis). It can also make pollen more irritating. In such cases, it's helpful to carry a facial mist and moisturizer, especially when children are likely to be particularly exposed, such as during school outings. Additionally, a bath at night can help remove allergens and prepare your baby for a good night's sleep. Moisturizers specifically designed for babies and children are also a powerful aid (see the benefits of moisturizers ).
Don't worry, a shower once a day is enough . In urban environments, we often adopt overly strict hygiene practices, which can lead to dry skin in babies . When children are less exposed to germs, their immune system becomes overactive, which can make them more susceptible to allergens.
Even infants with atopic dermatitis still need their immune systems stimulated through infections during early childhood. While careful protection against dust and dust mites does help prevent atopic dermatitis, excessive caution won't cure it. In fact, there are more children with atopic dermatitis in cities because hygiene practices may be overly strict.
Speaking of showering, tap water can also affect the skin. Depending on the lime content, bacterial quality, and possible pesticide residues, it can cause dryness or irritation. In cities, this depends on the area and population: the larger the population, the more frequent the testing, and the better the water quality. Generally speaking, city water is less harmful to a baby's sensitive skin , which is a good thing. To counteract the dryness caused by water, you can use bath oils specifically designed for babies and children.
Finally, although it may sound strange, an effective way to combat urban pollution is to ventilate your indoor spaces! Allergens and impurities accumulate indoors, and their concentration increases over time if the space is sealed for extended periods.
In rural or mountainous areas: What hygiene and health habits should infants with atopic skin adopt?
The fresh air in mountainous and rural areas is always an advantage , regardless of whether a child has atopic dermatitis. If you live in the mountains, you provide an environment with virtually no dust mites ! They prefer warm indoor spaces and dislike high altitudes. Above 1500 meters , temperatures rarely exceed 25 degrees Celsius, which is their preferred temperature.
However, fresh air also means more flora and fauna . Depending on a child's sensitivity, this may trigger a reaction or allergy . High concentrations of pollen in spring can also stimulate the immune system.
In this situation, carrying a facial mist and your choice of moisturizing products will be invaluable, and showering daily (preferably at night) and applying moisturizer daily are still effective ways to protect your baby's skin.
