Symptoms don't lie!
A few months after birth, has your baby's skin become dry and started to develop red spots ? Do you or your partner have atopic dermatitis ? Don't hesitate to establish some habits from birth that will bring comfort and pleasure.
Remember, prevention is the best ally. Atopic dermatitis is closely related to genetic factors, but there are still measures we can take. Two key words: prevention and repair .
Preventing atopic dermatitis and caring for your baby's skin
We know that dry skin loses its barrier function, potentially allowing allergens to penetrate, and allergens are part of the cause of atopic dermatitis (see the atopic dermatitis section). To repair dry skin, especially the skin barrier, we can help it regain its protective function . Don't forget, hydrated skin means less irritation.
To moisturize, apply a moisturizing cream or balm (see /en/mustela-mag/benefits-emollient-care for the benefits of moisturizing). In addition to providing hydration, they contain lipids that help restore the skin's natural oil layer, leaving it softer and more resilient. Studies have shown that applying moisturizing products daily from birth can reduce the risk of atopic dermatitis symptoms by 33% to 50% 1 . It would be a shame not to!
To enhance effectiveness, choose care products suitable for your baby's delicate skin (see Special Characteristics of Baby Skin). Even if you find your baby's skin soft and adorable and can't resist touching it, remember that it is not yet mature: the dermis is three times thinner than an adult's and is more permeable (special care is needed for atopic skin). It takes three years for skin to develop the functions of adult skin: therefore, use formulas specifically designed for infants and young children to meet their needs and be safe to use from day one .
Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis and Rash: Prevention Measures
In daily life, avoid any factors that may trigger an attack, including:
- Allergens , such as dust mites or dust.
- Irritating or drying elements , such as soap, rough clothing, dry air, and excessively high temperatures.
Of course, not all situations can be prevented, and there's no need to panic if your baby is overheated or likes to snuggle in your soft wool sweater. Just stay alert and try to avoid certain environments and activities. If your child enjoys playing in the water, adding /en/stelatopiar-bath-oilStelatopia bath oil to the bathtub or inflatable pool (using dechlorinated water) can also help protect their skin.
Nevertheless, atopic dermatitis can still occur in a baby's life. Don't panic! Moisturizing products are still the best solution at this time, and consult a doctor if necessary.
